Tollway Plaza 37-Maintenance of Traffic
Regina
Webster & Associates (RWA) was retained as a subconsultant to A.
Epstein and Sons International to develop
a Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plan for Plaza 37 of the Illinois Tollway, where
I-294 joins I-55. The Plaza 37 concept plan called for constructing
new plaza lanes approximately 100 feet south of the existing plaza
lanes, and realigning the plaza centerline by just over two
lane-widths to the west. The existing plaza building had to remain
in operation while a new plaza building was constructed on the west
side of the roadway. The nearby plaza access road and the
I-55/Joliet Road entrance and exit ramps to the south, together with
the other factors, made the MOT plan for the reconstruction of Plaza
37 extremely challenging. RWA prepared a Maintenance of Traffic
plan that met the objective of balancing the plaza capacity with the
need to expedite construction of new critical movement lanes. The
detailed plan sheets showed a three-stage maintenance of traffic
plan with numerous sub-stages, indicating plaza lane closures,
temporary work zones with pavement markings and construction
signing, and a plan narrative.
